Performance analysis is used
in a vast majority of sports as a means to help to enhance
results. It is a relatively new concept in equestrian sport,
though riders that have used performance analysis as part of
their training programme have seen vast improvements in both
their riding and achievements.
Used as a visual teaching aid for the rider:
Off the horse - the rider is able to visually see
themselves performing the task which is believed to be one of
the most powerful training tools. By being able to scrutinise
the tiniest of aberrations riders are able to work on these
specific areas offering a greater understanding of their
strengths and identifying areas for improvement thus enhancing
performance.
On the horse - the rider can see an instant recording
with the use of an in site projector showing all previous
efforts which provides for greater interaction and understanding
between rider and trainer.
Show the impact of the rider on the horse
Analysis of the riders posture and movement can identify areas
that may affect the way the horse moves and the effect this has
on performance.
Identify the strengths and help clarify points to
the rider With the use of play back and slow motion the strengths/weaknesses
can be identified and discussed with the rider . A benchmark can
be established and used to achieve an acceptable level of
consistency.
Analyse competitive performance and training Video analysis can be conducted whilst competing and then
analysed after the event providing feedback on the performance,
helping to make the rider aware of any areas that can be
improved to help further improve results. Also a comparison can
be made of the rider in a competitive state and natural state
and the differences investigated, as these may affect
performance.
Conference lessons / analysis Riders can send their own training videos to Centaur
Biomechanics for analysis. Relevant data can then be extracted
and stored to provide useful benchmark details and monitor
improvements. The results could also be emailed to the rider
Aerial analysis Suspended cameras over jumps help to identify the effects of a
rider on the horse whilst jumping or moving. An Aerial view can
be especially important whilst jumping as the rider position can
cause the horse to become unbalanced resulting in penalties
Feed back The rider can visually see for themselves their performance
which gives confidence, satisfaction and a chance to a greater
understanding of what is required.
Measurements Various measurements can be taken from the recording, such
as the angle of the riders' joint angles. Research has shown
that more experienced riders have shown a greater hip angle due
to a more seated posture with the arm carried in front, as
opposed to a novice rider who hunches their back which could
restrict the movement of the horse.
